Frequently Asked Questions

What is gematria?

Gematria is the traditional Jewish practice of assigning a numerical value to Hebrew letters and words. Because every letter has a number, two different words can share the same gematria value, and that shared value is often read as a meaningful connection (kesher) between them.

What is a gematria calculator?

A gematria calculator instantly computes the numerical value of a Hebrew word or phrase. Kesher Gematria calculates the value live as you type and shows the result across many different gematria methods at once, so you do not have to add up the letters by hand.

How does the gematria finder search the Tanach?

Type a Hebrew word and the finder calculates its gematria, then searches the entire Tanach (Torah, Nevi'im and Ketuvim) for every other word — and optional multi-word phrase — that has the same value. It is a full gematria search engine over the Hebrew Bible, returning the matching words and the verses where they appear.

Which gematria methods does the calculator support?

Over 25 methods are supported, including Mispar Hechrachi (standard value), Mispar Gadol (large/final letters), Mispar Siduri (ordinal value), Mispar Katan (reduced value), AtBash and other substitution ciphers, and name-based spellings like Mispar Shemi. You can search using one method or several at the same time.

How is gematria calculated?

In the standard method (Mispar Hechrachi) each Hebrew letter has a fixed value — א=1, ב=2 … י=10 … ק=100 … ת=400 — and the word's value is the sum of its letters. For example שלום = 300 + 30 + 6 + 40 = 376. Other methods change how each letter is counted, which is why the calculator shows several values side by side.

Is the Hebrew gematria calculator free?

Yes. The Kesher Gematria calculator, the Tanach finder, and the multi-word match tool are completely free to use in your browser, with no sign-up or installation required.

Can I find a connection between two specific words?

Yes. The Multi-word Match tool lets you enter two or more Hebrew words and finds which gematria methods give them the same value, revealing the connection (kesher) between them. You can also share discoveries with the community.
